DESCRIPTION: Title: Transitioning from a Linear Economy to a Circular Econo
my \n\n Abstract: All nations recognise the need to transition to a circul
ar economy but there are many challenges/barriers to doing this. In this s
ession\, we will discuss what has been happening in Australia over the pas
t few years as governments\, businesses\, industry associations and academ
ia introduce relevant policies and practices that support transformation f
rom a linear economy to a circular economy. This includes recent/current w
ork by the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group and the Productivit
y Commission\, as well as the actions being taken by organisations such as
the Australian Furniture Association. The ongoing research at Monash Univ
ersity provides empirical evidence relating to the adoption and implementa
tion of circular economy at the local level. The discussion will reflect o
n the recommendations being made to governments and the challenges/benefit
s experienced at the local level. Opportunities for research collaboration
on this topic will be explored. \n\n Bio: Prof Sohal’s teaching and res
earch covers operations/innovation/technology management\, supply chain ma
nagement\, circular economy and sustainability\, and healthcare improvemen
 t. He holds a PhD in Operations Management from the University of Bradford
Management Centre in the UK\, plus a BEng (Hons) and an MBA\, also from t
he University of Bradford. He has received research grants from the State
and Federal Governments\, the Australian Research Council\, a number of in
dustry associations and businesses\, as well as from Monash University. In
2001\, Prof Sohal received the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Postgraduate S
upervision. In 2004\, he received an award for research excellence from th
e International Association for Management of Technology and in 2009 the p
ublications award from the same organisation. In 2010\, Prof Sohal receive
d the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research\, and in 2013\, the Dean
’s Award for Excellence in Innovation and External Engagement. He was a
Board member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZA
 M) for over 10 years and ANZAM President during 2009. In 2011\, Professor
