DESCRIPTION: Join us on Tuesday 2nd July in London\, for an afternoon of di
 scussions with Dr Asma Barlas. \n\n Dr Asma Barlas is an internationally r
 enowned Pakistani-American writer\, academic and author of "Believing Wome
 n" in Islam: Unreading Patriarchal Interpretations of the Qur’an (Saqi B
 ooks\, February 2019). She was one of the first women to be inducted into 
 the foreign service in 1976. Six years later\, she was dismissed on the or
 ders of General Zia-ul-Haq. She worked briefly as assistant editor of the 
 opposition newspaper The Muslim before receiving political asylum in the U
 nited States in 1983. She was the founding director of the Center for the 
 Study of Culture\, Race and Ethnicity at Ithaca College\, the Spinoza Chai
 r in Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam and she is currently a prof
 essor of politics at Ithaca College. \n\n Venue is to be confirmed but wil
 l be in London. \n\n A light lunch will be served at 12.30pm and the sessi
 on will begin promptly at 1pm. \n
