DESCRIPTION: At this month's Ladies that UX London event we are discussing
designing for AI and System. We have talks from two speakers who will shar
e their experiences\, challenges and best practices. After the talks the B
rilliant Basics team will share the experience of their latest AI Hub and
you will have time to try some new technology on site! \n\n \n\n Speakers
for the evening \n\n System Design by Nur Karadeniz \n\n Talk Synopsis \n\
n User-centred systems empower people to thrive in the face of ever-changi
ng environments. Carefully crafted systems can offer new kinds of human-ma
chine\, machine to machine collaboration supported with intelligent techno
logies that centred around the user. Some call this smart services\, data-
driven design\, in any form\, such "smartness" of services amplify busines
s data through analytics and connected applications and create foundations
to design new kinds of business processes and user interactions. \n\n Sys
tem design is a practice that enables designers to dive beyond the surface
\, work collaboratively with business\, partners and tech experts to optim
ise complex systems or multiple systems to offer single\, smart interactio
ns. With the fundamental design principles in hand\, working at the system
level creates opportunities for companies to leverage data\, address user
\, business and sustainability goals more effectively. This way of creatin
g responsible services and a healthy balance on how people and machines wo
rk together. Methodologies such as system maps\, system blueprint and adva
nce task analysis are some of the highly useful tools improve collaboratio
n in multidisciplinary teams. In this session\, I will talk about the prac
tice of system design as an emerging design discipline and share some meth
odologies and application of system design. \n\n About Nur \n\n Head of E
xperience and System (UK&amp\;I\, EMEA\, The Middle East and Nordics) Desi
gn at Brilliant Basics.\nNur is a designer by training with backgrounds in
HCI and technology. She recently joined Brilliant Basics\, an Infosys com
pany where she looks after the overall experience practice across regions.
She has a wealth of practical and leadership experience in UX\, Service D
esign and Data-driven design. She believes amazing teams create great prod
ucts/services and says"Imagine a team with a joined passion for making lif
e better\, what can stop them!". Nur currently establishes a system desig
n practice as a new design capability that adopts system thinking and syst
emic approach to challenges while working as one team towards creating sus
 tainable solutions at scale. \n\n @nurdeniz \n\n linkedin.com/in/nurkarad
eniz \n\n Designing for artificial intelligence by Emily Sappington \n\n T
alk Synopsis \n\n We are entering the age of intelligence—a time when te
chnologists imbue artificially intelligent components into many products w
ithout a clear framework for how such intelligence is delivered to users c
onsistently. It is a product designer’s job to make AI feel human-like a
nd magical\, not overwhelming and scary to users. When designing for Artif
icial Intelligence scenarios\, whether for a large enterprise or small sta
rtup\, setting user expectations is critical to deliver a reliable product
. I will share some best practices from designing for AI in both large and
small organizations. No matter the company size\, a minimum viable produc
t is important to design and not to be the result of unplanned feature cut
 s. I will share what Minimum Viable Intelligence is for an AI product\, an
d how designers can deliver a clear UX when solving problems efficiently.
\n\n When thinking of how to design for intelligent products\, first and f
oremost it needs to seem competent. Users must trust the AI agent or servi
ce with information and believe that it can achieve their goal. The bar fo
r this depends on the expectations the designer sets. The most difficult t
hing about breaking out of scenario-focused AI is the lack of clear bounda
ries. Are you aspiring to create an entire conversational AI agent? Then t
he bar will be high. A less intelligent Bot\, however\, will teach users t
he rails of its conversation early on to avoid disappointment. In this tal
k we’ll dig deeper into setting appropriate expectations when designing
for AI across large and small applications. \n\n I'll share how drawing on
human interaction models helps designers know what to expect when people
encounter their AI product. Responsiveness when users expect it is only on
e part of this equation. Apps that explain processes in human ways\, like
thinking\, seeing\, or reading\, can benefit from showing users where they
are in a process\, while explaining it in natural ways. Emulating true in
telligence takes more than just seeming alive and being basically competen
t though. To surpass users’ expectations can be a delightful moment when
the product seems truly and independently intelligent. \n\n About Emily \
n\n Emily Sappington is the Product Design Manager for Voice &amp\; Conver
sational UI at Babylon Health. Previously she served as VP of Product at L
ondon-based AI startup\, Context Scout. \n\n Emily has spent the bulk of h
er career in the United States designing Cortana for Microsoft across devi
ces\, particularly Natural Language &amp\; UI interactions with the assist
ant. Emily is a lecturer\, US patent-holder\, career coach for Ada School
(the National College for Digital Skills in the UK)\, and is a recipient o
f an Exceptional Talent Visa from the UK Government and Tech Nation. \n\n
