DESCRIPTION: Doors 8:45pm/Music 9:00pm \n\n “Harmonically and melodically
\, Halferty is a distinctive guitarist...” - The Irish Times \n\n Tommy
Halferty - guitar \n\n Michael Buckley - tenor sax \n\n Leon Buckley - alt
 o sax \n\n Barry McBrien - trombone \n\n Leopoldo Osio - piano \n\n Ronan
 Guilfoyle - bass \n\n Christophe Lavergne - drums \n\n \nA birthday celeb
ration for Ireland's legendary elder statesman of the jazz guitar\, featur
ing a new work by Ronan Guilfoyle written as a tribute to Tommy's life and
work\, along with a selection of arrangements by Guilfoyle of Tommy's own
works. Featuring collaborators old and new\, join us to celebrate the lif
e and music of Tommy Halferty. \n\n \nThroughout his rich and varied care
er Halferty’s signature guitar sound\, tonally heavy\, brimming with jui
cy bebop lines and fat chordal arrangements has been instrumental in shapi
ng the sound of the Irish jazz. \n\n \nDublin has always been a ‘guitar
town’ with influences from the late great Louis Stewart defining genera
tions of guitar players. The same can be said for Halferty who has been eq
ually influential as a guitarist but also as a composer\, educator and men
tor to many Irish musicians over the years. \n\n \nHalferty’s professio
nal career began in the late 70’s\, when he featured in jazz fusion band
s like ‘Jump’ &amp\; ‘Nunn’. From the off\, Halferty wove in class
ical\, folk\, Irish traditional and rock influences\, distilling it into h
is own unique jazz signature\, something that remains a hallmark of his pl
aying to this day. A longer trio stint in the mid ‘80’s with drummer J
ohn Wadham and bassist Ronan Guilfoylecemented his reputation as a world c
lass guitarist. \n\n \nHe has shared stages with international jazz lumin
aries such as Lee Konitz\, Benny Golson\, Ronnie Cuber\, George Mraz\, Dav
e Liebman and vocalist Norma Winstone. Halferty has excelled in intimate d
uo settings\, evidenced by his long time collaboration with fellow Irish g
uitarist Mike Nielsen as well as duos with international heavyweights like
John Abercrombie and John Ethridge. \n\n \n“Tommy Halferty's superb du
o album with Mike Nielsen is perhaps the finest Irish jazz recording ever
made” - The Sunday Tribune \n\n \nTommy Halferty has been one of the ke
y architects and foundations for today’s vibrant Irish jazz scene\, as w
ell as adding to the reputation of Irish jazz internationally. Celebrate h
is life and music with IMC this October. \n
