DESCRIPTION: \n\n GitHub and the eScience Institute at University of Washi
ngton invite you an evening of discussion around the topic of "What can ac
ademia learn from open source?" \n\n Short presentations from our distingu
ished panelists below will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by
Arfon Smith\, GitHub's resident open source and science enthusiast. \n\n
\n Daniel Halperin (University of Washington) \n Katy Huff (UC Berkeley)
\n Dan Katz (National Science Foundation) \n Marina Meila (University of W
ashington) \n Jake VanderPlas (University of Washington) \n \n\n Software
plays a vital role in much of academic research and yet its development an
d maintenance is often not considered a creditable research activity. As l
eaders in their respective fields\, our speakers will discuss the role of
software in academia today\, how institutions must adapt to support these
important software tools and their producers and what the academy can lear
n from the credit and leadership models found in open source communities.
\n\n The event will take place from 6pm-9pm in the Physics/Astronomy Audit
orium (PAA 102) at UW on the evening of February 2\, and will be followed
by a reception in the WRF Data Science Studio. \n
