DESCRIPTION: Celtic Rock: Chasing Asteroids from Ireland \n\n In 1848\, And
rew Graham stared through the telescope at Markree Observatory in County S
ligo and saw a new object. He had discovered an asteroid – a chunk of ro
ck left over from the formation of our Solar System 5 billion years ago. M
etis (as it was named) was the ninth asteroid ever discovered world-wide a
nd the only one discovered from Ireland – until 2008… \n\n Join us at
Galway City Library on Tuesday 4 March 2025 at 6:15pm when we will have Da
ve McDonald with us for a whistle-stop tour through our Solar System and p
ut asteroids into context – where are they? How did they get there? Wher
e are they going? The presentation will touch on the various discoveries m
ade from Ireland and will mention some of the previous asteroid impacts on
Earth and some very close-shaves. \n\n Dave McDonald has so far discovere
d two asteroids\, an eclipsing binary star and published two papers on ast
eroid rotations\, all from amateur observatory “J65 Celbridge”\, Co. K
ildare\, The presentation is highly graphical and requires nothing more th
an an enquiring and interested mind. \n\n This presentation is one of a se
ries of events taking place across our libraries for Irish Astronomy Week.
