DESCRIPTION: South West Silents\, in collaboration with Studiocanal\, are p
roud to present a very special screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Manxm
an (1929). With live musical accompaniment by Stephen Horne\, we are takin
g one of the master of suspense's most beautiful of films\, back to where
he filmed it\, almost 100 years ago! \n\n The Film: \n\n Adapted from the
bestselling 1894 novel by Sir Hall Caine\, which sold half a million copie
 s. The Manxman is set in a remote fishing village on the Isle of Man where
two boyhood friends (Carl Brisson\, Malcolm Keen) take markedly differing
paths in adulthood\; but still manage to fall in love with the same woman
(Anny Ondra). \n\n Unable to find a suitable location on the Isle of Man\
, Hitchcock relocated the production to Cornwall. Specifically in Polperro
. And thanks to the beautiful cinematography by Jack E. Cox\, Alfred Hitch
cock’s penultimate silent film and one of the best and most mature works
of his early career. \n\n The Music: \n\n Stephen Horne: Stephen has long
been internationally considered one of the leading silent film accompanis
ts. A house pianist at London’s BFI Southbank for over thirty years\, he
has played at all the major UK venues and recorded music for many DVD and
online releases of silent films. Although principally a pianist\, he ofte
n incorporates other instruments into his performances\, sometimes simulta
neously. \n\n He regularly performs internationally and in recent years hi
s accompaniments have met with acclaim at film festivals in Pordenone\, Bo
 logna\, San Francisco\, Telluride\, Paris\, Cannes\, Hong Kong\, Bangkok\,
Shanghai\, Seoul\, Istanbul\, Berlin and Vienna. \n\n Thanks to the Studi
ocanal and the Trustees of Polperro Village Hall. \n\n South West Silents
 is a not-for-profit organisation. \n
