DESCRIPTION: "If you want to see the girl next door\, go next door!" Joan C
rawford \n\n A Hollywood icon and a star that shined for over half a centu
ry. Joan Crawford's (1904-1977) film career most certainly had it's ups an
d downs and yet\, every aspect of her work is fascinating and spell boundi
ng. \n\n With this very special Joan Crawford Double Bill\, which highligh
ts two key titles from the 1930s and 1950s\, Film Noir UK will be able to
show you the reason why Crawford is classed as the Queen of Hollywood. \n\
 n 12pm: Rain (1932): UK Premiere\nDirector: Lewis Milestone\nStarring: Joa
 n Crawford\, John Huston\, Fred Howard \n\n A fierce monsoon throws togeth
er several different individuals\nwho end up clashing over one person\, pr
ostitute Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford). \n\n W. Somerset Maugham’s powe
rful story had been adapted for\nthe screen before\, Gloria Swanson had th
e starring role in Raoul Walsh’s 1928\nsilent film Sadie Thompson. But i
t was Joan Crawford who pushed Maugham’s\ncharacter to the next level of
sexual and erotic energy. If anything Lewis Milestone’s\nRain (1932) no
t only oozes sex\, it pours! \n\n With an incredible performance by both C
rawford and fellow\nco-star John Huston\, Rain is a ‘tour de force’ of
camera work\, style and\ndirection of a film that caused controversy when
first released. \n\n Thanks to this stunning new 4K restoration\, Lewis M
ilestone’s Rain can be rediscovered and celebrated as one of the true cl
assic\ndramas of film history. \n\n This screening is the UK Premiere of t
he brand new 4K restoration. Our thanks to the Mary Pickford Foundation. I
ntroduction by James Harrison (Film Noir UK). \n\n 1:45pm: Sudden Fear (19
 52)\nDirector: David Miller\nStarring: Joan Crawford\, Jack Palance\, Glor
ia Grahame \n\n Playwright and wealthy San Francisco heiress Myra Hudson\n
(Joan Crawford) becomes romantically involved with actor Lester Blaine (Ja
ck\nPalance). But not everything is what it seems when it comes to Blaine
’s past. Hudson\nhas so many questions to answer in regards to her soon
to be husband. Should she\nbe worried? \n\n Directed by David Miller (Lone
ly Are the Brave) Sudden\nFear (1952) was the box office hit that Crawford
needed after leaving Warner\nBrothers in 1951. In fact\, it gave Crawford
her third Academy Award nomination\nand the first Academy Award nominatio
n in best supporting actor role for Jack\nPalance. \n\n Also starring Glor
ia Grahame\, playing Blaine’s deceptive\nex-girlfriend\, Sudden Fear is
a perfect example of deceit\, paranoia and suspense\nwhich we all love fro
m film noir. \n\n Special Introduction by Dr Lies Lanckman (Senior Lecture
r in Film Studies at UWE) \n\n Film Noir UK is a South West Silents compan
y and is a not-for-profit organisation. With support of the BFI Film Audie
nce Network\, awarding funds from the National Lottery in order to bring t
his project to more audiences across the UK. \n
