DESCRIPTION: On the 10th September 2017\, we were incredibly privileged to
welcome Dr Venkat Subramaniam to DubJUG. It was the first time in our ten-
year history that we hosted our meetup on a Sunday. \n\n Venkat was an awa
rd-winning author\, founder of Agile Developer\, Inc.\, creator of agilele
arner.com\, and an instructional professor at the University of Houston. \
n\n He had trained and mentored thousands of software developers in the US
 \, Canada\, Europe\, and Asia (and finally Ireland!)\, and was a regularly
-invited speaker at several international conferences. Venkat helped his c
lients effectively apply and succeed with sustainable agile practices on t
heir software projects. \n\n Venkat was (co)author of multiple technical b
ooks\, including the 2007 Jolt Productivity award-winning book Practices o
f an Agile Developer. A list of his books was available at agiledeveloper.
com. \n\n You could follow him on Twitter at @venkat_s. \n\n . \n\n Twelve
Ways to Make Code Suck Less \n\n We all have seen our share of bad code a
nd some really good code as well. What are some of the common anti pattern
s that seem to be recurring over and over in code that sucks? By learning
about these code smells and avoiding them\, we can greatly help make our c
ode better. Come to this talk to learn about some common code smell and ho
w to improve the quality of code.\n. \n\n Designing Functional Programs \n
\n Functional Programming promotes immutability and the use of higher orde
r functions. For those of us who have designed and architected application
s using an imperative style of programming and the object-oriented paradig
m\, this largely appears like a strange idea. We often ask\, how is it pra
ctical to apply these ideas\, realistically to build practical application
 s. It turns out it's highly practical but we have to change how we design
and how we model our systems. Come to this presentation to think about fun
ctional style and how to start viewing design to make better use of this w
ay of programming.\n. \n\n REGISTRATION NOTES \n\n The Dublin Java User Gr
oup meetups are designed to enhance the technical knowledge of attendees\,
and due to the overwhelming demand to attend our events they are always f
ull. \n\n The organizers and the speaker are giving their time for this ev
ent to share knowledge with you at the Dublin Java User Group community\,
freely. The booking fee you pay today will be refunded\, in whole\, provid
ing you attend the event at the allocated time. If you do not attend the e
vent for whatever reason\, the fee you have paid will instead be allocated
