DESCRIPTION: Tonight we feature two talks at the first event to be held in
our new premises! \n\n 1. "Standards – who needs them?*" - Julian Tait\,
Open Data Manchester \n\n 2. Using data to empower local readerships" - E
ma Sabljak\, Data Journalist \n\n Note: both speakers will be presenting r
 emotely. \n\n 1. Julian's talk is about Open Data Manchester’s journey i
nto the open standards for data world\, and how once you delve into this n
ichest of worlds things are never the same again. \n\n It will give an ove
rview of open standards\, how we first got involved in them and how we use
d user research and system analysis to understand the key components neede
d for the standards we have created and ones in development\, that are tac
kling supply chain data exchange to promote a more resilient and circular
economy. \n\n BIO\nJulian\, who began his career as a music photographer\,
is the co-founder and CEO of Open Data Manchester CIC\, a not-for-profit
organisation established in 2010. The organisation aims to help communitie
s and organisations better understand and utilise data. \n\n He oversees t
he development of several open standards for data including:\n· The Open3
P data standard for the packaging value chain\, which facilitates the exch
ange of packaging data between organisations\, promoting process and resou
rce efficiencies to reduce packaging's environmental impact and reducing c
osts.\n· The Open Product data standard for batteries and electrical and
electronic equipment.\n· The Open Standard for Fashion and Textiles Data\
, which is currently in development. \n\n He leads the development of equi
table data stewardship organisations through the Data Cooperative Working
 Group. \n\n +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ \n\n  \n2. Ema's talk will focus
on providing data journalism for local or even hyperlocal audiences. Spec
ifically the ways we go above and beyond where open data may not be local
enough to interest readers. The talk will focus on some of the most promin
ent projects from our data team\, including our high streets project\, inv
estigations into vacant unit ownership and derelict land\, and potentially
our latest tracker for A96 crashes.\nAll of these have different data col
lection methods and provide insight into some of the constraints we face a
s journalists serving local communities. \n\n BIO\nEma moved from Croatia
to Scotland in 2017 to study journalism and has lived in Glasgow since the
 n. After working as a live reporter for nearly four years\, she joined the
award-winning DC Thomson data team in 2023. The team most recently won th
e Best Data Visualisation award in for their high street tracking project
WAN IFRA's Digital Media Awards Europe. \n\n \n--------------------------
 ------------------------------------------ \n\n \nThis event is organised
by a charity - Code The City. \n\n CTC suggests a small donation to help
with charity admin costs\, but if this is a barrier please just change the
ticket price to what you can afford. If that is still a barrier\, just as
k for a free ticket. \n\n This is our first session in our new premises\,
which is still a work in progress. That means that our disability access i
s not what we want it to be. If you are uncomfortable\, or unable to use s
tairs\, please book an online ticket for the Zoom session. We are working
to improve this but it will take a few months. \n\n If you select a physic
al ticket and it happens that we cannot meet physically you will have to a
ttend the Zoom session. \n\n Those attending the physical space meetup sho
uld attend at 6pm for pizza and drinks. The talk will be from 6.30pm. Door
s will be locked from 6.30pm. \n\n **If tickets are sold out please do not
attend as you will be refused entry without a ticket. ** \n\n Our booking
system is provided by Tito. Their platform is integrated with payment pro
cessing by Stripe Please note that if the booking system asks for a credit
card\, it means credit OR DEBIT card. \n
