DESCRIPTION: "Cybersecurity and Simondon's Concretization Theory" \n\n \n "
This paper argues that Gilbert Simondon’s theory of the origin and\ndeve
lopment of technical objects helps us identify faulty theoretical\nassumpt
ions within computer science and cybersecurity. In particular\,\nSimondon
’s view is that the process of the ‘individuation’ of technical\nobj
ects can have similarities with the development of living beings – a\nvi
ew that stands in stark contrast with hylomorphic and reductionist\nviews
of technical objects currently common in computer science. We\nargue that
those common hylomorphic approaches to software development\nlead to exces
sive modularity in software applications\, which in turn\nresults in less
secure systems." \n\n "We argue that software development will be more sec
ure if it takes\ninspiration from the development of living beings and ref
ocuses on the\ndynamic reciprocal relationship between software applicatio
ns and their\ntechnical and social environment." \n \n\n \nOur Papers in
Systems discussion series will continue with discussion of “Cybersecurit
y and Simondon's Concretization Theory: Making Software More Like a Living
  Organism\," by Ziyuan Meng and Jon K. Burmeister\, 2022. \n\n The discuss
ion will be led by Nick Travaglini (@ntravaglini@hachyderm.io on mastodon)
  \n\n When: December 4th\, 2023\, 1PM - 2PM Eastern Time (US/Canada). The
Zoom room will remain open until 2:30PM for informal discussion. Check tim
e in your time zone. \n\n The paper is available at:\nhttps://revistes.ub.
