vent is open to all. \n\n \n\n This CPD will focus on concussion in sports
law\, covering the\nlitigation in the AFL in Australia and the new Amster
dam Consensus Statement on\nConcussion in Sport. \n\n This presentation wi
ll be given by Prof. Jack Anderson\, University of Melbourne \n\n Jack And
erson is on leave as Professor and Director of Sports Law Studies at the\n
University of Melbourne. He is currently acting Special Counsel (Integrity
\nRegulation) at Racing Victoria. Jack has published extensively on sports
  law\,\nincluding most recently with D Thorpe et al\, Sports Law (4th ed\,
OUP\n2022). Formerly a CAS arbitrator (2016-2019)\, he is a member of Wor
ld\nAthletics’ Disciplinary Tribunal\, the integrity unit of the Interna
tional\nHockey Federation and is an Ethics Commissioner for the Internatio
nal Tennis\nFederation. Jack is an arbitrator for the Football Federation
of Victoria\,\nFootball Australia and he was appointed by the federal gove
rnment to chair the\ncommittee that led to the establishment of the statut
 ory National Sports\nTribunal of Australia. \n\n Abstract\nChronic\nneuro
 logical trauma\, severely impacting the physical\, psychological\,\nprofes
sional and familial life of former AFL (Australian Rules) players\, is now
\nthe basis of multiple class action. Former AFL players are seeking compe
nsation\nin negligence against treating doctors\, clubs and/or the governi
ng body or\nleague in question. The proceedings are taking place against t
he backdrop of a\nSenate inquiry into concussion in sport. This presentati
on assesses the substance\nof such actions\, comparing them to those which
occurred previously in the US\nand are ongoing in the UK and Ireland. It
also asks whether litigation is the\noptimal means of resolving the medica
l\, regulatory\, and legal concerns of not\nonly the players involved\, bu
t with how the game is played\; indeed\, the very\nfuture of contact sport
itself. \n\n Pre-reading A\npaper relevant to the presentation can be acc
 essed here \n
