DESCRIPTION: Background \n\n Since 2008\, The Bar of Ireland has from time 
 to time hosted a lecture dedicated to the legacy and values of Daniel O’
 Connell. The lecture serves as an opportunity to speak to not only the leg
 al profession\, but also judiciary\, public officials and representatives 
 on a contemporary interpretation or theme connected to the life and legacy
  of Daniel O’Connell and his association with statehood\, human rights a
 nd the rule of law.  \n\n This year\, coinciding with the 250th anniversar
 y of Daniel O'Connell's birth\, The Bar of Ireland is honoured to welcome 
 Philippe Sands KC in delivering the memorial lecture.  \n\n   \n\n About t
 he Speaker \n\n Philippe Sands KC is Professor of Law at University Colleg
 e London and Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard. He is a practicing barr
 ister at 11KBW\, appears as counsel before the International Court of Just
 ice and other international courts and tribunals\, and sits as an internat
 ional arbitrator. His books include East West Street: On the Origins of 
 Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide (2016)\, The Ratline: Love\, Lies and
  Justice on the Trail of a Nazi Fugitive (2020) and The Last Colony: A Tal
 e of Exile\, Justice and Britain’s Colonial Legacy (2022). His new book\
 , 38 Londres Street: On Pinochet in England and a Nazi in Patagonia\, will
  be published in April 2025. He is translated in more than 30 languages. \
